The STEM Teacher and Researcher Program: Improving classroom practices of K-12 STEM teachers through authentic research

Abstract:
The STEM Teacher and Researcher Program works to improve the recruitment, preparation and retention of K-12 math and science teachers by facilitating their development as teacher-researchers. Core activities are a summer research experiences in national laboratories across the US, weekly pedagogical workshops led by master teachers, and the development of curricular and research products by STAR Fellows that are publicly shared. Since 2007, STAR has sponsored over 700 placements for over 500 pre-service and early career science and math teachers. Extensive evaluation has shown that the STAR experience contributes to Fellows’ commitment and confidence to K-12 education, development of a teacher-researcher identity, and the use of reformed classroom practices, including engaging students in research in the classroom. A recent investigation has shown that the STAR research experience also improves Fellows’ growth mindset and feelings of belongingness in the STEM research community. In 2020, the STAR program transitioned to virtual research experiences and weekly workshops. We report on challenges and lessons learned through the transition and the aspects that will be retained about a virtual STAR experience that will be used to increase participation from underrepresented groups in the future.
