DOIs for geodetic data and derived product collections at the NASA GSFC CDDIS

Abstract:
The Crustal Dynamics Data Information System (CDDIS) is NASA’s archive of space geodesy data and products derived from these data, as well as supporting information. As one of NASA’s Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs), CDDIS follows the guidelines, recommendations, and standards set forth by the Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) and its working groups for assigning digital object identifiers (DOIs) to data and derived product collections. DOIs provide ease and persistence in the identification, discovery, accessibility, and future citations of data and derived products, and chronicles provenance. To date, CDDIS has published 120 DOIs that resolve to Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), Doppler Orbitography and Radio-positioning Integrated by Satellite (DORIS), and Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) data and derived product collections with publication years spanning 1976 to the present. These CDDIS data and data product collections are archived in the NASA EarthData Common Metadata Repository (CMR) and available through NASA’s EarthData search. The CDDIS actively participates in the Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS) DOI working group, helping to develop and establish novel best practices and community-agreed standards for minting geodetic data and derived product DOIs. Methods for assigning DOIs to geodetic data and derived product collections at CDDIS, data discovery and acquisition via the EarthData search, and arising questions and objectives involving future DOI assignments to geodetic data, data products, and metadata at CDDIS will be discussed.
