Abstract:
'GLOBE Mission Earth' (GME) proposes the systematic embedding of GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) and NASA resources along the K-16 continuum, leveraging existing partnerships and networks. The program's primary goal is to create developmentally appropriate materials and activities, supported by high-quality professional development and ongoing support for teachers, engaging teachers, K-12 and undergraduate students. The program has five geographically distributed universities and research institutions where a curriculum progression has been developed based on research-based best practices, including professional development sessions. GLOBE Mission Earth supports the adoption of project-based practices and the involvement of K-12 students in science projects with the adoption of the scientific method. Critical thinking, creativity, planning, personal and social responsibility, and stronger communication skills are encouraged and cultivated. ‘Student Projects Activating Research and Knowledge’ focuses on projects done in the K-12 continuum since the 2016-2017 school year when the program's implementation began. Statistics show essential growth in the number of projects and the number of students involved since the beginning of the program. Student and teachers' testimonials from interviews highlight that GME projects ignited a spark. They enabled students to develop an inquisitive mind and be methodical in their approach to solve a research problem, thinking that science can be fun. Materials from samples of student projects (posters pictures, student photos, videos), will be presented.
