Aerosol-cloud interaction events over the high Arctic

Abstract:
The A-CCP (Aerosol-Cloud, Convection, Precipitation) NASA study and the three supporting missions of the Canadian Space Agency are indicative of the importance associated with the impacts of aerosol-cloud dynamics. These impacts are even more critical in the climate change context of Arctic magnification. We will present an overview of remotely sensed aerosol-cloud events over the high Arctic using ground- and satellite-based, passive and active sensors. These will include Polar summer and Polar winter examples of aerosol cloud interaction induced by smoke, dust, and volcanic sulfate aerosols acquired using a combination of sunphotometry, starphotometry, moonphotometry and lidar / radar observations from our PEARL observatory in Eureka, Nunavut Canada supported and complemented by CALIOP / Aeolus / CloudSat vertical profiles and MODIS / TROPOMI imagery products in the greater high-Arctic region. Preliminary statistics related to the Twomey indirect effect will also be presented.
