Abstract:
The NOAA Big Data Program (BDP) is transforming NOAA’s approach to data access by leveraging modern cloud, data and technology capabilities. BDP has established successful partnerships and collaborations with cloud service providers (CSPs) Microsoft, Google and Amazon to enable public access to NOAA data with the intent to catalyze utility of this data for societal benefits, improved decision-making and innovation in environmental services.
In the upcoming decade, BDP plans to transition 15 petabytes of NOAA data and build its user interactions. Engagement with users of NOAA data through the CSP is complex and challenging, given the varying perspectives, limitations and regulations for both NOAA and CSPs. In spite of these challenges, NOAA and BDP recognize the importance of user understanding that demonstrates the value of NOAA’s environmental information for societal and economic benefits.
This discussion will discuss the BDP progress and journey, including path to achieving future goals and insights from recent activities, and facilitate collaborative discussion to determine innovative methods for improving user interactions by making NOAA data publicly available through the cloud.
