Abstract:
The SEIS package on InSight has been collecting high quality seismic data on Mars since February 2019. Almost a full martian year of data has been collected so far. SEIS continues to be capable of resolving extremely small amplitude signals on Mars, in the absence of the microseismic energy observed on Earth. The Marsquake Service is a ground segment support group of InSight that creates and curates a seismicity catalogue for InSight. Despite SEIS being highly sensitive to local martian winds, hundreds of suspected teleseismic marsquakes have been recorded by MQS, a number of which are strong enough to be located. These events are characterised by long duration signals on the order of 10’s of minutes, with frequencies ranging from approximately 10s to over 10Hz. Event distances range from within a few degrees of the lander to about 100 degrees, with magnitudes spanning from Mw1.5 to 4.0. Further, a second class of very short duration events is regularly being identified that is likely due to local thermal cracking. This presentation provides an overview of the seismicity observed so far - describing the different signals characteristics and the temporal evolution of the seismicity.
