Evaluation of WRF-Chem simulations of the atmospheric sea salt concentration over East Asia with field observation and MODIS satellite observation

Abstract:
Sea salt aerosol is one of the major constituent of primary natural aerosol particles, which is mainly transported from coastal area. The amount of sea salt on the steel surface is the main factor in the atmospheric corrosion. The observed data indicate that the sea salt sprays first adhere to the steel, after which the extent of Cl- on the steel surface increases.

In this study, the fully online coupled WRF-Chem model was utilized to estimate atmospheric Cl- iron over East Asia. We implemented in three sea salt schemes of WRF-Chem, GOCART, MOZART and MOSAIC. Field observations has been used to verify the simulated sea salt concentration near surface. And then, by comparing with field observation results and MODIS satellite data, sea salt concentration in WRF-Chem simulation is evaluated.
