Constraining Methane Fluxes from the Eastern US using ACT-America Airborne Data and the GEOS-Chem Adjoint Model

Abstract:
The ACT-America campaign (07/2016 - 07/2019) provides the most comprehensive set of airborne methane observation to date over the Eastern US. Here we combine the ACT-America dataset with a high-resolution chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem CTM at 0.25°×0.3125°) and its adjoint to develop an improved understanding of the methane budget for this region under a single integrated inversion framework. Forward model errors (e.g., methane background; boundary layer depth) are assessed and mitigated prior to the inversion. Prior emission inventories in the model include GEPA, Canada and Mexico oil/gas emissions, WetCHARTs v1.0, daily QFED v2.5r1, etc. This presentation will discuss the optimal estimation results including error assessment and cross-evaluation against independent observations.
