Impacts of the COVID-19 Shutdown on California’s Air Quality

Abstract:
The 2019 novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) was first reported in California in late January 2020 with lockdowns and restrictions beginning in March 2020 to keep people home and stop the spread of the virus. The implemented lockdowns and restrictions resulted in a curtailing of industry and a decrease in related anthropogenic pollution. We define the coronavirus impacted period as March 16, 2020- June 14, 2020. We utilize MODIS-derived PM2.5 data and OMI NO2 data to compare the effects of the COVID-19 lockdown period to a climatic mean control in seven diverse locations in California, each representative of different pollution sources. All locations experienced decreases in both PM2.5 and NO2 during the COVID-19 impacted period.
