Abstract:
We are familiar with cold outbreaks associated with the polar vortex occurring in the Earth's lower stratosphere.. Other planets, such as Jupiter, have polar vortices. If the Sun has a polar vortex, what might it look like? Reasoning from conservation of angular momentum, we would expect the vortex at each pole to spin faster than lower latitudes in the same hemisphere. Is it a cyclonic (at north polar regions) and an anticyclonic (south pole) vortex, appearing occasionally at one or both poles, and synchronized in time, or not? If it exists, is it confined near the solar surface, or does it extend deep into the convection zone, perhaps occupying the volume inside the tangent cylinder to the equator at the bottom of the convection zone? This cylinder cuts the photosphere poleward of 50 degrees latitude. In addition, Is there a meridional circulation associated with the vortex that is different from that observed at lower latitudes? The Sun's global flows are not clearly known poleward of about 60 degree latitude, but the evolution of polar fields, which ultimately form the upcoming solar cycle's seed, depend strongly on the flows in polar regions. Combined studies from polar regions' observations from solar orbiter type polar missions and (M)HD simulations of polar vortices could shed light on whether or how often the Sun has a polar vortex and hence how it influences the evolution of polar fields.
