Established geoscience education strategies to support geoconservation initiatives in East Portland, Jamaica.

Abstract:

The unique geotectonic setting of Jamaica creates a diverse topography that underpins its acclaimed biodiversity and contributes to its vibrant culture. On the northeast side of the island, Portland Parish is recognized as one of the most pristine and beautiful areas of the country, and is home to several examples of national and grassroots efforts to protect its natural and cultural heritage. That said, Portland provides an example of how geology is not incorporated into traditional nature conservation. The East Portland Special Fishery Conservation Area was established in the Parish of Portland to support the country’s national priorities of protecting coral reefs and their resources. Marine conservation in Portland has been focused on the ocean and misses the important connection between ocean health and the condition of the land. To date, geological knowledge, which is imperative to understanding this connection, has not been incorporated in conservation strategies. For example, to what extent do contaminants from rivers impact the health of East Portland’s coral reefs? While scientific knowledge is essential to alleviate the global and local trend of reef decline, it is critical to work with local communities on educational initiatives to promote understanding and protection of these valuable and sensitive
