Abstract:
Kelp forests are considered the “ecosystem engineers” and phytoplankton is vital for marine ecosystem productivity. In this study, we examine the potential effects that giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) forest might have on the characteristics of nearshore water masses and planktivory rates. We use a “Control Volume” approach to estimate phytoplankton through the kelp forest off the coast of Hopkins Marine Station in southern Monterey Bay, CA. Through continuous physical and biological in situ profiling of the water column, we are able to estimate the flux of phytoplankton and water mass characteristics. We present results focusing on water mass characteristics and potential correlation with in situ Chlorophyll concentration. We hope the results of this study contribute to better understanding biophysical interactions in the nearshore.
