Abstract:
In light of the great promise of multipoint measurements in the ionosphere-thermosphere presented by the forthcoming Geospace Dynamics Constellation mission, the scientific foci for the mission are used to motivate the development of potential high-priority investigations that are enabled by this paradigm. Criteria for determining investigation priorities are suggested and are used to select prototype scenarios for further development. The goal of the development is a specification for some of the flight instruments that could meet these requirements. The relative abilities of state-of-the-art instruments to meet these requirements are discussed, and examples of instruments designed to make measurements of the neutral atmosphere are presented and discussed in this light.
