'The Characterization and Mapping of Tropical Cyclones in the Bay of Bengal'

Abstract:
Tropical Cyclones (TC) are extreme weather phenomena in the Northern Indian Ocean (NIO) that can generate large storm surges with flooding to the coastal areas and powering up with regular tidal surges, these interactions usually move to the east coast of India and head of BOB toward Bangladesh. With the favourable conditions for cyclone genesis, in the NIO the Bay of Bengal (BOB) area is a breeding ground of frequent tropical cyclones and has already experienced many deadliest cyclones in the world history. Many research approaches have been already made on the intensity, frequency changes and cyclone activity as well for the prediction of TC in respect to NIO region, but a comprehensive characterization and pattern analysis of these TC is missing which may help to draw a probabilistic scenario for the future intense cyclones. An intensive assessment of the TC using satellite observations would also establish a standard baseline for assimilation in the regional climate and cyclone prediction models. Under this research effort, satellite observation will be the base line for analyzing the generated intense cyclones from past and present decades, when global geostationary satellites have a large database for 23 years from the initial stage of satellite era but the NOAA Hurricane Satellite data (HURSAT) project has eased the process to utilize TC data for the period of 1987 to 2005. Also, the new version of HURSAT-B1 v06 project covers the data spans for the period of 1978-2015. Also, the imagery from the ESA’s sentinel mission can be examined for comparative and better analytical results. An identical study has been made on the characteristics of TC around the Australian region by Dare & Davidson (2004), therefore, this new study would provide a notable finding for the BOB.
