Abstract:
The Thermosphere-Ionosphere Data Assimilation (TIDA) system is a research tool for the thermosphere and ionosphere consisting of an ensemble Kalman filter, a physics based background model, and plotting and statistical analysis tools. In this talk we describe the TIDA components, discuss the need for data assimilation in the thermosphere/ionosphere system, and give quantitative examples of the use of neutral mass density from CHAMP, GRACE and SWARM, neutral composition and temperature from GOLD, and ionosonde measurements from more than 40 stations, to improve system specification. We show results from several storms, including an extreme storm in November 2003, to demonstrate the capabilities of the assimilation scheme.
