Abstract:
Here we present dissolution rates of particles with varying surface-area-to-volume ratios. Using nearly neutrally buoyant sugar particles, we can study the shape-motion-flux relationship of freely moving particles as they dissolve. The dissolving particles were designed in a way such that researchers can specify the desired particle density. These particles were manufactured in-house by graduate and undergraduate students. While being tested in homogeneous, isotropic turbulence, the particles dissolved in a self-similar manner allowing us to study shape dynamics without worrying that shape would change over time. We noticed some interesting dynamics and are currently trying to understand these using a variety of methods. We hope to highlight the interesting interactions between solutes, particles, and turbulence.
