Abstract:
Several UCLA ground-based magnetometer (GMAG) arrays use single board computers (SBCs) to process and transmit data via the internet. Upgrading these SBCs to meet with modern security standards allows for a new generation of GMAGs with expanded capabilities and protections against internet-based attacks. Under the SMART project, we replace the BeagleBone SBCs at many of the UCLA managed sites with Raspberry Pi 4 units and upgrade their software with python based scripts. In this study, we discuss how these improvements allow enhanced system capabilities including: improvements on real-time data dissemination and reception, additional time-stamping options, the inclusion of cellular network connectivity, modern security protocols for internet-based communications, and the ongoing capacity to remotely update and maintain these systems securely. Through these results, we hope to provide a framework for real-time GMAG communications.
