Making use of geological information: a perspective on challenges and opportunities from the Geological Survey of Western Australia

Abstract:

With over 130 years of data generated through mapping the state of Western Australia, the challenge for the Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA) is in transforming these data to an understanding of the 3D multiscale geology of the state. In addition to tried and tested pathways of delivering interpreted spatial data products, there is an emerging need to provide machine-readable portals and formats so stakeholders can access and manipulate primary data, including data reported to GSWA by the resources industry. The level of automation required to face these challenges drives a need to develop and implement an ontology-based geological knowledge system as suggested by the 3D Loop consortium. Through the OneGeology supported 3D Loop consortium, the GSWA are unlocking open-file company drillhole datasets to produce a greater understanding of the state stratigraphy and developing regional-scale 3D models directly from maps and digital geological observations. Testing these models against the wealth of geophysical data acquired both by government and industry produces a robust geological framework that stimulates exploration and hence economic growth.
