Abstract:
The West Texas Lightning Mapping Array maps lightning channels in 3D at VHF and is equally well-covered by the GOES-16 and GOES-17 GLMs, and so provides an opportunity to understand which lightning flashes and flash processes are observed by both satellites. Coincident ground-based measurements from LF systems (ENI and NLDN/GLD360) provide another perspective on these discharges. Real-time observations in the Lubbock National Weather Service Forecast Office in 2019-2020 have identified several cases where the different physical processes detected by each sensor resulted in unexpected relative detection efficiency and/or apparent misclassification of ground strikes. These cases will be used to illustrate the ongoing challenges facing users of lightning data as well as opportunities for richer physical understanding through multi-sensor blending of these datasets.
