Abstract:
Academia teaches us to think critically, seek answers through scientific inquiry, and publish results in peer-reviewed journals. However, these skills alone are not sufficient to address many of the problems facing humanity today, which require collaborative science and administrative support by people from diverse backgrounds, perspectives and knowledge systems working together in an environment that fosters a culture of inclusivity, equity and respect. That means learning to listen with compassion; lead from any position, regardless of title; and effectively manage, collaborate, and support projects and people in all aspects of research including field work as well as education and outreach. We highlight efforts of the Diversity and Inclusivity Working Group within the International Arctic Research Center (IARC) to cultivate diversity, equity, inclusion and access, and the top- down and bottom-up approaches. Leadership and institutional support is critical in this endeavor. Activities include writing a diversity and inclusivity statement, building awareness of diversity, equity, inclusion and access within IARC via relevant workshops/trainings/discussions, growing a library of resources, and begin working on implementation. We envisage actively collaborating with the broader University of Alaska community in its efforts to foster a culture of respect, diversity, inclusion and caring recognizing that inclusion is a continuous process for ensuring a just, equitable and safe work environment including in the field, for all.
