Abstract:
Established in 2019, the AuScope Geochemistry Laboratory Network (AGN) focuses on the development of an Australian consortium of Earth Science institutes cooperating to develop national geochemistry research infrastructure. It is the AGN’s mission to: (i) promote existing geochemical capability across Australia; (ii) promote capital and operational investments in new, advanced geochemical infrastructure; (iii) develop a central repository for multiple isotopic data sets; (iv) support Australian participation in national and international open data initiatives; (v) support professional development via online tools, training courses and workshops; and (vi) support increased end user access to laboratory facilities.

An AGN Project Office has been established at Curtin University to initiate and develop the network. The initial project focuses on data collections held at Curtin (SHRIMP U-Pb), Macquarie University (Laser U/Pb-Hf isotopes) and the University of Melbourne (Fission-track/UHe, 40Ar/39Ar). The AGN is currently developing a FAIR-based open data platform in collaboration with Lithodat, AusGeochem. This platform is both a data repository and interface between the private or institutional and collaboration/public domain, facilitating laboratory data upload and dissemination. The AGN test-use case is developed in consultation with various experts in the Australian geochemistry community to ensure a wide range of requirements for the platform are addressed, this collaboration with national institutes is central to the platform development.
During the course of research, institutes and geoscientists will be able to use this new platform as a tool/space to upload and share their data with collaborators by managing data privacy levels, to plot and compare their data within context of the large volume of publicly funded geochemical data aggregated by the AGN. The AusGeochem platform will therefore become a key resource in quantitatively understanding Earth system processes, utilising world-class data produced by Australian geochemistry laboratories.
