Abstract:
AGU released their commitment to 8 Deliberate Actions to Address Racism in Our Community, but we encourage everyone to hold themselves accountable as individuals within their own conduct/career/lab. Early career researchers (ECRs) are uniquely positioned to lead initiatives that shift academia into a more just and inclusive space. Yet, ECRs--especially those with marginalized identities--are acutely affected by power structures, implicit and explicit biases, and gatekeeping that can present obstacles towards making change. In this discussion, we center the experiences of ECRs in (1) navigating hostile climates, (2) creating communities (e.g. lab groups, collaborations) that forefront just and anti-racist practices, and (3) working with internal and external coalitions to sustain these efforts across academia. This discussion will provide actionable steps and advice for developing best practices towards creating and sustaining just, equitable, diverse, and inclusive spaces and behaviors.
