Observational gaps in coastal zones monitoring in terms of natural and human-induced forcing factors, response and evolution
Observational gaps in coastal zones monitoring in terms of natural and human-induced forcing factors, response and evolution
Session ID#: 117749
Session Description:
A large fraction of the world population lives in coastal zones. These regions are affected by multiple stress factors due to a broad variety of natural and anthropogenic phenomena. Observation of coastal zone changes and of their multiple drivers is currently developing, but strong gaps remain in terms of spatio-temporal coverage, continuity and collected parameters. To provide useful information to decision-makers and coastal zone managers, various types of observations from space and in-situ need to be made on the long term. The objectives of this session are: (1) review existing observing systems able to provide valuable information on the forcing parameters and the coastal responses and evolution; (2) assess the status of current coastal services, and (3) identify observational gaps. Presentations on space-based data/products used in synergy, and analysed within an integrated framework, as well as prospects about more adapted space sensors (e.g., from small satellite/CubeSat constellations) are particularly welcome
