Subsurface Storage of Natural Gas, CO2, and Hydrogen: Key Learnings and Future Opportunities

Session ID#: 117984

Session Description:
This session focuses on subsurface storage of fluids to underpin safe and reliable storage and utilization operations. Examples include near surface porous reservoirs, saline formations, underground caverns in salt and carbonate strata, and depleted oil reservoirs. The objective of the session is to reach across disciplinary boundaries to connect scientists, engineers, professors, students, storage operators, and other professionals who are interested in underground storage and utilization. Topics of interest to this session are integral to longer-term goals of low-carbon and sustainable energy in the U.S.A. and around the world.

We are interested in a cross-disciplinary discussion that broadly incorporates aspects of:

  • Geomechanics of underground storage of fluids
  • Engineering design considerations of fluid storage
  • Techno-economic optimization of regional adoption of fluid storage
  • Current and future engineering policy considerations
  • Risk assessment of underground fluid storage
  • Underground natural gas, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen storage as part of a holistic approach to energy transition
