Atmospheric and Oceanic Processes Governing the Trade Wind Regions
Atmospheric and Oceanic Processes Governing the Trade Wind Regions
Session ID#: 118852
Session Description:
Shallow convection in the trades contributes considerably to the uncertainty of climate sensitivity in a warming climate. To reduce this uncertainty, a better understanding of processes modifying cloudiness across all scales and boundaries, from the particle scale to meso-scale oceanic eddies and synoptic scale disturbances of the trades, is needed. To foster such a process understanding, in particular the interaction across different scales, the complementary field experiments of EUREC4A-(OA) (Elucidating the Role of Cloud-Circulation Coupling in Climate; Ocean-Atmosphere) and ATOMIC (Atlantic Tradewind Ocean-Atmosphere Mesoscale Interaction Campaign) were conducted during Jan-Feb 2020 in the western tropical Atlantic. The objective of this session is to advance our understanding of the coupling between clouds, convection and oceanic and atmospheric circulations and their links across different earth system components. We welcome contributions from the full community and especially encourage contributions based on measurements, modeling and theoretical studies.
