Phase transitions and physical properties in deep planetary interiors: measurements, theory, and implications
Phase transitions and physical properties in deep planetary interiors: measurements, theory, and implications
Session ID#: 119213
Session Description:
Physical properties of geomaterials in planetary mantles and cores govern important geodynamic processes. Unraveling the continuous and discontinuous changes of the properties with pressure, temperature, and the physical state is thus decisive for our ability to model and understand planets. In this session we aim to highlight the most recent progress in the measurements and computations of the physical properties of minerals, rocks, and melts at mantle and core pressure and temperature conditions. We would also like to strengthen the cooperation between the mineral physics and geodynamics communities. Therefore, we welcome contributions that blend new mineral physics discoveries with numerical models of planetary interiors.
