Sustainable Energy Transitions in the Developing World

Session ID#: 119562

Session Description:
Developing countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America face the twin challenges of reducing poverty and addressing air pollution and climate change. With significant potential for growth in energy demand, the future of global carbon emissions rests on a successful clean energy transition in the developing world.

We invite papers that examine technical, economic, and socio-political pathways to a clean energy transition in the developing world. Specifically, we are interested in perspectives that address recent growth in renewables, shift to electrification of transportation and other end-uses, infrastructure needs, labor impacts of shifting job-creation sectors, pollution mitigation efforts, energy poverty, and strategies for just energy transitions.

We also encourage contributions that study the role of multilateral organizations such as UNFCCC and China’s Belt and Road Initiative in accelerating sustainable energy transitions as well as analysis of potential commitments and strategies that may be announced at the COP26.
