Magnetic reconnection as a driver of the global magnetosphere dynamics
Magnetic reconnection as a driver of the global magnetosphere dynamics
Session ID#: 119624
Session Description:
Magnetic reconnection couples the energy input from the solar wind to the magnetosphere and ionosphere. Examining the impact of magnetic reconnection from whole system perspectives is critical to understanding and quantifying how solar driving affects geospace dynamics. This session welcomes studies that address the following questions and beyond: Where does reconnection happen at dayside magnetopause and magnetotail? How is it controlled by the solar wind and magnetosphere conditions, as well as by foreshock, shock, magnetosheath turbulence/instabilities? How does magnetopause and magnetotail reconnection impact the magnetosphere-ionosphere system, for example, via waves, field-aligned currents, and energetic particles? How does dayside reconnection impact magnetotail reconnection, and vice versa? Coordinated observations and simulations are encouraged.
