Process-level Understanding of Cloud-Aerosol-Precipitation Interactions and Their Parameterizations in Weather and Climate Models
Process-level Understanding of Cloud-Aerosol-Precipitation Interactions and Their Parameterizations in Weather and Climate Models
Session ID#: 120130
Session Description:
Over the recent decades, the landscape of studies on cloud-aerosol-precipitation interactions (CAPI) has evolved. The focus has shifted from aerosol-induced microphysical changes in cloud-particle sizes to feedbacks among aerosol, microphysics, thermodynamics, radiation, and dynamics. Process-level CAPI studies have also moved from CAPI in individual types of cloud to mesoscale or synoptic-scale cloud systems for a better understanding of CAPI in the context of weather and climate. With this evolution and advancement, parameterizations of CAPI-related processes in weather and climate models have also evolved, although the low-level understanding of CAPI and associated feedbacks has slowed down the development of CAPI parameterizations. This session invites all theoretical, observational, experimental and modeling studies of CAPI that advance the process-level understanding of CAPI mechanisms using either the traditional microphysical approach or the more recent approach involving those microphysical and dynamical feedbacks. Studies associated with the development of CAPI parameterizations are also welcome.
