Near-surface geophysics for soil and vadose zone structure and processes

Session ID#: 120312

Session Description:
The vadose zone spans from the soil surface to the groundwater table and is important for hydrological and biogeochemical reasons. The development of geophysical methods over the last several decades has yielded a large toolbox to better describe soils and the vadose zone structure and gain valuable insights about hydrological processes at different spatial and temporal scales. However, data interpretation, data-error quantification, and the integration of models and data remain open topics of research. We invite contributions to this session that use geophysics to address questions about hydrologic processes in the vadose zone, and their potential coupling with biogeochemical and microbial processes. We encourage contributions ranging from methods for optimizing agriculture, improvement of existing data sets, novel processing and inversion methods, and case studies that provide new insights into the use of geophysical data for the modelling of processes in the soil and vadose zone across all scales.
