Boundary conditions and Earth-ice interactions beneath ice sheets and ice shelves

Session ID#: 120799

Session Description:
The study of interactions between ice sheets and the solid Earth has enabled significant advances in our understanding of the cryospheric response to changing climates. An increased quantity of geological and geophysical data acquired in Greenland and Antarctica has resulted in an improved picture of the subglacial environment. However, the linkages between subglacial boundary conditions and past, present, and future ice sheet and ice shelf behaviour remain enigmatic, and might be better integrated into numerical modelling frameworks.

The aim of this session is to bring together research that strengthens our understanding of the linkages between the solid Earth and overlying ice sheets/shelves in polar regions. Particular topics of interest include (but are not limited to): subglacial topography/geomorphology, sub-ice shelf bathymetry, geothermal heat flow, subglacial geology, basal sediment and water distribution. We also encourage contributions aiming to fill major geological and geophysical data gaps on the continental shelf or interior.
