Environmental Indicators to Track Global Trends in Sustainability

Session ID#: 120814

Session Description:
Policymakers around the globe urgently need a better understanding of environmental problems to advance planetary solutions that resolve sustainability challenges. Environmental indicators are research products that distill complex data into actionable information. Examples of such indicators include numerical rankings that identify the global leaders and laggards in sustainability. This empirical approach to environmental protection makes it easier to anticipate problems, reduce inequality, and optimize investments in sustainable development. In this session, we welcome abstract submissions from researchers who synthesize environmental datasets into policy-oriented metrics that: (1) track trends in global sustainability issues; (2) triage the most pressing environmental threats faced by developing countries; and (3) help visualize inequalities in environmental health around the globe. We anticipate a richly interdisciplinary session covering data-driven insights into trends in climate change, pollutant exposure, biodiversity and habitat loss, and other critical environmental issues.
