The Continental Lithosphere: A Half Century of Deep Exploration
The Continental Lithosphere: A Half Century of Deep Exploration
Session ID#: 121023
Session Description:
The continental crust and upper mantle are the foundation of our society, host of critical resources that sustain life as well as many of the most serious geological hazards. For these reasons over the past 50 years the continental lithosphere has been the focus of numerous large scale geophysical and geological initiatives such as COCORP, BIRPS, LITHOPROBE, EarthScope, TopEurope and SinoProbe to cite but a few. Although these efforts had a major impact on our view of the lithosphere at the time, our understanding of both the techniques used and the tectonic context of the areas surveyed have evolved considerably in light of subsequent work. In this session we seek to combine fresh assessments of the results of these pioneering efforts with results from the latest investigations andnew technologies that are expanding our understanding of the structure and evolution of the continental lithosphere.
