Transient processes at the Earth’s magnetopause: multi-point, multi-scale observations and numerical simulations
Transient processes at the Earth’s magnetopause: multi-point, multi-scale observations and numerical simulations
Session ID#: 121411
Session Description:
The magnetopause is very dynamic with transient phenomena triggered primarily by magnetic reconnection and velocity shears at the dayside and on the flanks. These plasma processes allow for direct solar wind entry and open pathways for transfers of mass, energy, and momentum into the magnetosphere. This session welcomes studies of transient phenomena operating at the magnetopause or impacting the magnetopause, for instance, Flux Transfer Events, Kelvin-Helmholtz waves, and magnetosheath high-speed jets, including their causes and consequences. Multi-spacecraft studies at various scales as well as global and local simulation studies of transient magnetopause processes are particularly encouraged. We aim to bring together and encourage collaborative studies between in-situ observations (i.e., MMS, Cluster, THEMIS, ARTEMIS, and Van Allen Probes), numerical simulations, and ground observations (e.g., all sky imager, radar, and ground magnetometer) with an ultimate goal to progress towards full assessments of space weather impacts of transient processes at the Earth’s magnetopause.
