Global challenges for quantifying air pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions

Session ID#: 121441

Session Description:
Estimates of atmospheric emissions of air pollutants and greenhouse gases are key to addressing challenges across a variety of disciplines ranging from air pollution, atmospheric chemistry, human health impacts, and mitigation, to biogeochemical nutrient cycling, projections of environmental change, environmental justice, and energy and climate policy. New information from increased observational capabilities and international reporting requirements (e.g., Article 13 of the Paris Agreement) opens up additional opportunities for emissions quantification and evaluation, particularly for uncertain sectors or regions with limited information. In this collaborative session we invite presentations that address these challenges and highlight the use of emission inventories across disciplines and in policy applications. Topics may include new developments in inventory methodologies, testing protocols, use of atmospheric observations, top-down vs bottom-up approaches, uncertainty analysis, challenges unique to emission estimates in particular locations, sectors, or spatial scales, as well as novel uses of inventory data.
