Thermodynamics of Earth and Planetary Materials: Energetics, Equations of State, and Elasticity

Session ID#: 121577

Session Description:
The thermodynamic properties of minerals and melts determine their behavior and phase equilibria across a wide spectrum of environmental conditions, spanning from planetary surfaces and impact events to the deep interiors of Earth and other planets. The elastic properties of earth and planetary materials are intimately connected to their energetics through equations of state and facilitate the exploration of planetary interiors via seismic wave propagation. When integrated into models for phase equilibria and rock properties, thermodynamic and elastic properties have the potential to solve key problems in earth and planetary sciences, from assessing surface processes and metamorphic mineral reactions to exploring the composition and dynamics of deep planetary interiors. In this session, we invite contributions on experimental, computational, and theoretical advancements in constraining the thermodynamic and elastic properties of earth and planetary materials as well as on applications of thermodynamic modeling in earth and planetary sciences.
