Land-Atmosphere Interactions: From Bedrock to Boundary Layer

Session ID#: 121756

Session Description:
Fluxes of water, energy, momentum and scalars between the land and atmosphere are jointly determined by the coupling of the land surface (e.g., soil moisture, vegetation) and atmosphere (e.g., boundary layer turbulence, clouds, and precipitation). Recent advances in measurement (e.g., boundary layer profiling and remote sensing, in-situ measurement networks and field campaigns) and modeling (e.g., DNS, LES, and regional to global scale coupled models) of coupled land-atmospheric processes enable a deeper understanding of the underlying feedbacks and sensitivities. This session invites studies that take advantage of these new opportunities to provide novel insights into the spatial and temporal variability of land-atmosphere interactions and associated processes. Studies that investigate the role of soil moisture, vegetation, boundary-layer turbulence and clouds on land-atmosphere exchanges are of particular interest, as are studies integrating regional to large-scale networks, field campaign and remote sensing data.
