Mineral and rock magnetism
Mineral and rock magnetism
Session ID#: 121796
Session Description:
Rock magnetic properties and recordings have an astonishing multitude of applications in Earth, environmental, and planetary research: from magnetostratigraphy, paleomagnetism, archeomagnetism, planetary geology, biomagnetism, environmental magnetism, and more. These applications depend critically on our understanding of the magnetic properties and recording processes inherent in various magnetic mineral assemblages. Here we focus on recent research advances on the acquisition, preservation, and alteration of natural remanent magnetizations, from nanometer to planetary scales, and on the magnetic properties of natural materials and assemblages. Contributions are invited from all areas within mineral and rock magnetism, including new theoretical and experimental approaches, fundamental studies of magnetic minerals and their grain size-dependent properties, anisotropy, advances in characterizing magnetic mineral or grain size mixtures, and quantitative models of the behavior of natural and synthetic magnetic systems. Studies quantifying the connections between rock magnetic properties and environmental parameters are particularly welcome.
