The Value of Undergraduate Research Experiences (UREs): Evaluation and Findings

Session ID#: 121928

Session Description:
Undergraduate research experiences (UREs) are programs that engage students in authentic scientific research early, typically under the guidance of a mentor, and in some cases, with the support of a cohort of peers. UREs provide students with the opportunity to learn research skills, explore the nature of science, experience the scientific culture within their discipline, and develop a sense of belonging to the scientific community. This session invites proposals that share evaluation findings and educational research which further expands such understandings of the value and impact of URE programs of all formats (e.g., Research Experience for Undergraduates (REUs), Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs)). Areas of interest may include but are not limited to broadening participation, the impact of the pandemic and remote learning on UREs, high impact practices that support students’ personal growth and progress toward STEM careers, and the positioning of UREs within the broader educational ecosystem.
