Remote Sensing of Fire Processes and Biomass Burning (BB) Emissions

Session ID#: 122004

Session Description:
Remote sensing observations of fires, including pre-burn and post-burn fuel conditions, fire behavior, and BB emissions, are widely used from tactical fire response and air quality monitoring to climate science studies. Using these observations requires models describing how sensor capabilities are impacted by relevant properties of fuels, fire, and smoke. Understanding these capabilities requires reconciling ground-based and in-situ measurements of fire processes and emissions with remotely sensed observations across a range of scales.

We invite contributions on topics including but not limited to:

  1. Verification of satellite and airborne retrieval of fuels, fires, and smoke using field measurements;
  2. Modeling capabilities including machine learning tools synergetic with remote sensing for fire behavior and smoke monitoring;
  3. Comparison of fuels, fire and smoke observations at multiple scales;
  4. Characterization of fire behaviors and conditions in relation to smoke properties;

Contributions from field experiments are welcomed.
