Coupling of Clouds, Convection, and Circulation from Meso- to Planetary Scales
Coupling of Clouds, Convection, and Circulation from Meso- to Planetary Scales
Session ID#: 122113
Session Description:
Atmospheric moist convection plays crucial roles in circulation and climate through condensation, radiative effects, turbulent mixing and the coupling to the surface. The coupling of clouds and convection with mesoscale circulations is important for understanding organized convection and extreme precipitation; cloud-radiative effects are crucial for many dynamic systems, such as the MJO; and wind-evaporation-SST feedbacks modulate the evolution of many important phenomena on a range of spatio-temporal scales, including convective organization, hurricanes, tropical rain belts, ENSO and the cloud feedback.
In this session we welcome theoretical, modeling and observational studies that address fundamental understanding of interactions between moist convection and circulations ranging from mesoscales to planetary scales. This may include e.g., studies that use observational campaigns to describe such interactions, studies that use idealized / realistic modeling of convective systems, storms and circulations, or studies addressing the sensitivity of cloud-circulation coupling to climate change and vice-versa.
