Advances in Computational Analysis in Geophysical Processes: Applied Math Perspectives on Multiscale and Stochastic Models

Session ID#: 122315

Session Description:
Complex nonlinear multiscale turbulent dynamical systems are ubiquitous in geosciences. This special session is to honor the memory of Prof. Andrew Majda for his cutting-edge contributions to this area of nonlinear geophysical fluid dynamics. For nearly three decades, beginning in 1995, Prof. Majda’s groundbreaking ideas and techniques in modern applied mathematics led to seminal advances in multiscale and stochastic modeling of complex phenomena. Inspired by Prof. Majda’s contributions, in this session we will continue exploring further the following topics:

(1) Nonlinear multiscale-modeling strategies for complex geophysical systems. Example applications include mesoscale-synoptic ocean dynamics, sea ice, moist convection, the Madden-Julian oscillation and El Nino.

(2) Suitable stochastic models for better characterizing the uncertainty and statistical features of nature, including appropriate statistical closure models and stochastic (super)parameterizations.

(3) Efficient numerical algorithms for solving complex nonlinear multiscale and stochastic systems.

(4) Data-driven and machine learning strategies to improve the multiscale and stochastic models.
