Characterization, Mitigation, Mission Designs, and Consequences of Asteroid Impacts on Earth

Session ID#: 122379

Session Description:
The session will address the asteroid hazard to human life, infrastructure, ecosystems, and the global environment, as well as methods for risk assessment and mitigation, including deflection experiments and characterization of asteroid physical properties, internal structure, surface morphology, small body dynamics, and spin states. The AIDA collaboration that includes the NASA DART and ESA Hera missions to the binary asteroid Didymos will address all these topics, and the status and plans will be presented. The assessment of Earth impact effects, kinetic impact effects, and planetary defense scenario development using high-performance computer simulations are also important activities. Characterization data are required for these models. Simulation models inform mission designers of the suitability and effectiveness of various mitigation methods. We encourage a broad spectrum of opinion in our effort to bring together diverse research efforts for this session.
