Deep Earth-Surface Interactions: Links between Earth’s Internal Dynamics and Evolution of the Hydrosphere, Atmosphere and Biosphere
Session ID#: 123027
Session Description:
The evolution of the hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere is intimately linked to the dynamics of Earth’s interior across a range of spatial and temporal scales. On the longest timescales, degassing of the mantle has regulated the composition and volume of the atmosphere and oceans, while exchange of material between the surface and deep Earth has produced evolving melt compositions, the rise of continents, and the formation of distinct chemical reservoirs. On shorter timescales, evolving mantle-induced deflections of Earth’s surface have affected ice-sheet stability, ocean circulation, and patterns of speciation. At the same time, interactions between subduction, orogenesis, weathering, and the carbon cycle have played a key role in secular climate change. Although understanding of these feedbacks between the solid and fluid Earth is progressing, many aspects remain unresolved. In this session, we welcome novel contributions—across spatio-temporal scales and from all related disciplines—that better constrain these interactions.
