Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group I 6th Assessment Report: "Climate Change 2021: The Physical Science Basis"
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group I 6th Assessment Report: "Climate Change 2021: The Physical Science Basis"
Session ID#: 123106
Session Description:
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will complete its Working Group I 6th Assessment Report (WGI AR6) in July. "Climate Change 2021: The Physical Science Basis" includes 12 Chapters, an interactive Atlas, a Technical Summary and Summary for Policy Makers. In this session, we highlight the scientific results from the Chapters and Atlas as presented by the Lead Authors. The authors' work began with the scoping meeting in May 2017 and concluded with the governments' acceptance of the Chapters and approval of the SPM in July 2021. The intent is to have all reports from the 6th assessment cycle available to inform the 2023 Global Stocktake by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change when countries will review progress towards the Paris Agreement goals (keep global warming to well below 2°C).
This assessment has significantly expanded on the 2013 AR5 report drawing upon advances in theory, observations, modeling, and analyses. For example, Chapter 12 focuses on climate information relevant to regional impact and risk assessment. The Atlas presents observed and projected changes in climate indicators, providing assessments of regional change in interactive maps and analyses usable for scientists, the public, and policy makers. In this sixth assessment cycle, language and methods across the 3 Working Groups were merged with material in the WGI report from Lead Authors of WGII and WGIII. In this session of speakers and panelists, the Lead Authors from WGI present the conclusions from the report.
