Creating a Legacy Exploration Seismic Data Archive: A discussion of Potential Benefits and the Path Forward

Session ID#: 123486

Session Description:
Exploration seismic for the discovery and production of natural earth resources has been collected for about 100 years. This invaluable data set collected at great expense, largely by the Oil and Gas industry, represents a unique treasure trove of information extremely useful for improving our understanding of the Earth’s near surface and crust. This data set may only be acquired once in human history. Its preservation and accessibility to the global research community would be a tremendous benefit to science and humanity. This session will explore potential research benefits and strategies for collaborating with industry to archive the data, as well as logistical considerations for making it accessible to the scientific community. Contributions utilizing industry seismic data are welcome from academic and industrial community addressing problems ranging from testing of new algorithms, near surface processes, gas hydrates, CO2 sequestration, continental margins, subduction zones to deep crustal and upper mantle structures.
