Imagining Ocean Science: Public Engagement Using Visualization and the Arts
Imagining Ocean Science: Public Engagement Using Visualization and the Arts
Session ID#: 123985
Session Description:
Oceanographic science has a history of taking place in remote and inaccessible regions, resulting in minimal public engagement. In recent years, a growing number of scientists and institutions have been looking to expand their reach. Scientists now bring in local community members, artists, students, and scientists using data visualization, technology, and the arts. These mechanisms enable a broader understanding of the ocean and offer learners new opportunities to engage with the ocean sciences. The use of creative arts such as performance, visual, and multimedia can establish a new space for dialogue and make the public rethink the way data is shared, breaking down the complexities of ocean research. This session will share examples of innovative projects that use the arts and visualizations to create interactive storytelling, design, and engagement. Original presentations will highlight examples of best practices for a variety of creative outlets and unique ways of immersing the public.
