Microbe-mineral interactions preserved across scales

Session ID#: 124213

Session Description:
Microorganisms and the Earth interact across spatial scales, within landscapes, and through geologic time. With wide-ranging metabolisms and distributions, microorganisms are major mediators of essential elemental cycles on Earth as well as early diagenesis in the geologic record. The biodiversity of microbial communities and metabolic capabilities exhibit patterns on local, regional and spatiotemporal scales. However, preservation patterns of biosignatures within earth system analogs for habitable realms on Mars await detection and exploration via next-generation, emerging technologies. Leveraging integrative approaches that document microbe-mineral interactions, this session invites presentations — ranging from microbial biosignature syntheses to mineral-associated preservation mechanisms to novel in-situ or remote detection methods. We encourage presentations that explore these components through interdisciplinary methods or multiscale techniques, with the goal of advancing the search for life on Mars.
