Advances in Observationally Informed Earth System Modeling for Coastal Environments
Advances in Observationally Informed Earth System Modeling for Coastal Environments
Session ID#: 124222
Session Description:
The modeling of physical and biogeochemical processes in coastal environments is often highly simplified, with conventional Earth system models making various approximations, omissions and linearizations when coupling ocean, land, river, ice and permafrost dynamics. This session highlights the development of modeling and observational approaches designed to improve our understanding of coastal change and its impact on human activities from the tropics to polar regions. We encourage submissions in: (1) coupled Earth system model development, with a focus on land-river-ocean-ice interactions in the coastal zone; (2) capturing physics and biogeochemistry across scales, including variable-resolution and nested modelling capabilities; (3) the development of parameterizations and subgrid models for multi-physics processes; (4) integrated modeling and/or observational analysis of coupled coastal dynamics, including processes affected by sea-level rise, flooding and inundation, waves, tides, geomorphology and biological interactions. Submissions addressing associated causalities, including impacts on fisheries, energy extraction, shipping and governance are also welcome.
