Program Design of Undergraduate Research Internships: Managers’ Insights and Best Practices Shared
Program Design of Undergraduate Research Internships: Managers’ Insights and Best Practices Shared
Session ID#: 124316
Session Description:
Research Experiences for Undergraduate (REU or URE) programs engage students in the process of research and the scientific community, provide professional development, and aim to increase diversity. REU internships are supported by a wide range of institutions, including universities, museums, and field stations; however, there are limited opportunities for programs to share lessons learned, particularly across disciplines. In this session, we invite REU PIs and internship managers in the broader geosciences (GEO), biosciences (BIO), and other STEM fields in all work sectors to share lessons learned. Presentation topics could include: alternative mentoring structures, strategies for teaching technical skills in a short time, fostering student identity as scientists, logic models and program evaluation, providing diversity and inclusion education, and the use of small, whole-group projects to build group cohesion and synthesis, among others.
